Master Plans, Mock-ups, and Renderings

Some projects and clients require more than lighting design alone. Owners, cities, planners and committees all benefit greatly from the information provided by a Lighting Master Plan. Frequently, these plans are central in various approvals processes as well as obtaining public and private funding. A mock-up offers the opportunity to see how an area or structure will respond to different effects and lighting systems, as well as offer a preview of the end result. Renderings are another alternative to convey the look of the installed design.

Initially, we come to you, and meet with as many involved parties as possible, including the clients, city and traffic planners, community leaders, utility concerns, and firms and agencies involved in the improvement and revitalization of your area. We study, photograph and extensively document our target areas. Upon our return to Seattle, we develop presentation-grade schemes and concepts, supported by plans, drawings, and renderings, and go back to the site to obtain further input from the client and any approvals committees. Back home, we use that feedback to further develop our concepts. During our next presentation, we begin orchestration of a mock-up, which gives everyone the chance to see what permanent architectural and area lighting will look like.

Good master planning also can assist in fundraising efforts. A draft of our “City of Bridges” Master Plan garnered Cleveland’s Committee for Public Art the then-largest ever grant for design awarded by the National Endowment for the Arts. Our early design concepts for the bridges also were instrumental in obtaining significant funding from the John P. Murphy Foundation. On a private level, after the mock-up, owners of the restaurants, clubs and companies in the neighborhood surrounding the bridges realized what a tremendous attraction to their businesses the lighted bridges would be. One restaurateur alone donated $50,000!

Mock-ups also are a wonderful way to raise community support, as we distribute our mock-up photographs to the client as well as various agencies for publicity and funding. Once we’ve incorporated the feedback and received approvals from the client and other necessary parties, we move into design documentation and finalize your Master Plan. The result is a Master Plan that provides designs, details, and the roadmap to ably engage engineers, contractors, manufacturers and service providers for actual installation. We like the opportunity to continue our work through advanced design development and construction administration—the chance to see the Plan become a part of our client’s nighttime views!

RDLD project renderings hang in corporate offices, city halls, art galleries and private collections. They’ve also been used as window displays, and the images used to market T-shirts, posters, even drink coasters and jewelry. Further, because we create the renderings and can take the photographs, there typically are no copyright or usage problems. Additionally, original renderings (or high resolution scans of them) can be given to major donor(s) or auctioned off.
