In six months, this Indian Ocean resort was 70% renovated, then expanded to include a new guest wing of 40 suites. RDLD’s lighting design required an understanding of foreign equipment and local codes and a quick, buildable design. The challenges in this island paradise were many, including a staggering 200 percent import duty, an unskilled local labor pool possessing few tools, and sharp energy constraints dictated by the utility and conservation entities. Nevertheless, the owner’s goals were met, with lighting that looks full and unrestricted, with central and public areas featured and guest wings soft, yet safe.
